The September International Breakfast of the 2020-21 year of the Rotary Club of New York took place on Zoom on Sep 16, 2020. The speaker was Consul General Almat Aidarbekov, who has extensive diplomacy experience across Turkey, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Consul General Almat Aidarbekov provided an overview of Kazakhstan’s history and economic reforms that are helping Kazakhstan make significant progress in recent years.

Consul General Almat Aidarbekov emphasized that Kazakhstan is the 9th largest country in the world with rich agricultural resources and a diverse geography. Attracting a high degree of foreign investment, Kazakhstan has become the largest economy in Central Asia. In terms of foreign affairs, the United States was the first nation to recognize Kazakhstan’s independence and a strong relationship has flourished over the years. A prominent number of Kazakhstan’s students are being educated in universities in the United States.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is in the process of devising and implementing economic reforms to diversify the economy. Specifically, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has implemented a new system to gather input from civil society as Kazakhstan creates its future. Financially, Kazakhstan has fortified its savings fund through a resource-rich economy and has maintained a low level of public debt.

Consul General Almat Aidarbekov concluded by stressing optimism for Kazakhstan’s future noting the country’s strong financial reserves and a highly educated workforce committed to continuing the development of the nation’s economy. He emphasized Kazakhstan’s strong relationship with the United States and the global community based on a shared respect for diversity.
