Today, the former exile homes of Thomas & Katia Mann and Lion & Marta Feuchtwanger – located in Pacific Palisades, California – are places for international cultural encounters. Through a residency program that combines lecture tours, workshops, events, and symposia, as well as radio broadcasts and digital media formats, the houses radiate out from Pacific Palisades across the United States and to Germany, providing important inspiration and ideas for transatlantic relations. Benno Herz, Program Director & Head of Fellowship Programs at the Thomas Mann House, tells us about the historical development and gives a glimpse into the current program. Together with Nikolai Blaumer, he is the editor and co-author of the book Thomas Mann’s Los Angeles: Stories from Exile 1940 – 1952 (Angel City Press, 2022) and the forthcoming volume Das Thomas Mann House – Politischer Denkort am Pazifik (Wallstein Verlag).
