Zoom meeting - Haiti Air Ambulance

David Ellis/Marcia Lehman - Haiti Air Ambulance

Via Zoom - February 13, 2025 at 12 noon EST - https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85434976872

  • HAA transports, triages and treats critically ill patients throughout the country. Over 40% of our patients are pregnant mothers and their newborns/infants.
  • Trips by road throughout Haiti can take hours; HAA can make these trips by helicopter in 20 minutes or less, thus saving critically ill patients who otherwise would have little to no chance of survival.
  • HAA transports doctors and other medical staff to their respective clinics and hospitals throughout Haiti, thus positively impacting thousands of patients a year.
  • HAA performs “Last-mile” delivery of critical medical supplies, vaccines and food to NGO’s, hospitals, clinics, orphanages, etc. on a continuous basis throughout the year.
  • HAA has over 200 landing sites throughout the country, which are not usable by airplanes. This ability to use landing sites greatly expands our ability to help so many in need throughout the country.
  • HAA personnel trains hundreds of community members each year in Basic Life Saving/CPR, etc., so that these members are able to be “first responders” when a medical emergency arises.
  • Among its many partnerships, HAA has a close and ongoing relationship with the 3 largest hospitals in Haiti. HAA has helped them throughout the years with their critical needs. These hospitals are the following:
  • Partners In Health
  • Health Equity International (formerly known as St. Boniface Hospital), and
  • Albert Schweitzer Hospital

Europe's Economy at a Crossroads: Recovery After Several Crises or Stuck in Stagnation?

March 6, 2025, 1:00 pm note time change to accommodate presenter - Consulate NYC Restaurant - 44 West 56th Street

The presentation:
Europe's Economy at a Crossroads: Recovery After Several Crises or Stuck in Stagnation?
After several crises, from the coronavirus pandemic to the inflation and energy crisis to the current recession in several major economies (e.g. Germany), the European economy is at a crossroads: will there be a recovery or is further stagnation on the horizon? Growth rates are uneven across the continent, with some countries performing better than others. In addition, the economic outlook remains uncertain due to geopolitical tensions and political changes in many countries around the globe. European foreign trade, particularly with the US, China and other markets, could be a key factor in the economic recovery. However, trade tensions and lower global growth prospects are dampening hopes of a rapid export-driven turnaround. Aside from short-term uncertainties, the European economy faces a number of structural challenges, which are emphasized in Mario Draghi's latest report on the future of European competitiveness. For example, the noticeable decline in parts of industry, demographic change with its impact on labor markets and social security as well as declining productivity growth call for structural reforms.

Short Bio
Tobias Thomas is Professor of Economics at the Graz Schumpeter Centre (GSC) of the University of Graz, Vice Chairman of the Austrian Council of Economic Advisors (“Austrian Productivity Board”) and Director General of the Austrian Federal Statistical Office (“Statistics Austria”). At international level, he is a representative at the United Nations Statistical Commission (UNSC), the United Nations Conference of European Statisticians (UNCES), the OECD Committee on Statistics and Statistical Policy (CSSP) and the Committee on the European Statistical System (ESSC). After studying economics at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and the Technische Universität Berlin, Thomas gained his doctorate summa cum laude at the Helmut-Schmidt-Universität Hamburg, where he later completed his habilitation. Thomas was a visiting scholar at, among others, Columbia University in New York at the invitation of Nobel Prize winner Joseph E. Stiglitz and Anya Schiffrin. Thomas gained further experience in management positions and in consulting in the private and public sectors. He regularly presents his research findings at conferences and in specialist journals and is regularly featured in national and international media. In 2024, he was quoted 1,699 times in the media.

RCNY International Breakfast at the UN

Sarah Towle guest speaker at the March 27 RCNY International Breakfast at the UN

Topic: "CROSSING THE LINE  FINDING AMERICA IN THE BORDERLANDS"

Sarah Towle is an educator, researcher, and award winning author, a human rights defender, choral soprano, and charismatic speaker. She has taught English language literacy, cross-cultural communication, and the writing craft for three decades on four continents across the age span and in myriad class contexts, including under the trees in refugee settings. Sarah resides in an ephemeral borderlands, buffeted and buoyed by a diversity of languages, cultures, landscapes, and creeds. Crossing the Line: Finding America in the Borderlands is Sarah’s debut full-length book.

Why this book, why right now? The author writes:
"It was family separation and “kids in cages” that drove Sarah Towle to the US southern border. On discovering the many-headed Hydra that is the US immigration system, she could never look away again. Crossing the Line: Finding America in the Borderlands charts her journey from outrage to activism to abolition as she exposes, layer by “broken” layer, the global deterrence to detention to deportation complex that is failing everyone—save the profiteers and demagogues who benefit from it. Crossing the Line is now more timely than ever, transforming overnight from a handbook for a more humane world into a manual for safeguarding and standing up for human rights. Wondering what Trump 2.0 will look like? It’s all in Sarah’s book. A deftly woven tapestry of history, memoir, and oral storytelling, Crossing the Line obliterates today’s dangerous, divisive, and disturbing disinformation narratives on immigration through riveting human tales of ordinary people expressing extraordinary acts of daily kindness. They inspire us all to join the grassroots frontline “war of welcome” that Sarah documents, before we travel much farther down our current course—one which history will not soon forgive or forget."

Whitney Tilson - Successful Investor/Civic Activist

Whitney Tilson - Successful Investor and Civic Activist

April 24, 2025 - Marsanne Restaurant (Chelsea) 233 8th Avenue

Whitney Tilson is a successful investor and civic activist.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Tilson grew up in Tanzania and Nicaragua, the child of teachers who met and married in the Peace Corps. After earning his bachelor’s degree in government from Harvard College and an MBA as a Baker Scholar from Harvard Business School, Tilson has dedicated his career to impactful endeavors.

As a founder of Teach for America and the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, Tilson has been a longtime advocate for education reform and minority-owned businesses. And as an investment manager and writer for the past 25 years, he’s always fought for average Americans, warning them about the internet bubble, the housing crisis (on “60 Minutes” in December 2008), and how Lumber Liquidators was poisoning its customers with toxic flooring (again on “60 Minutes” in March 2015).

Tilson is an avid mountaineer, who climbed the Nose of El Capitan in June 2020 and has summited Mt. Kilimanjaro, Mt. Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Eiger. He also regularly competes in obstacle course races and has run seven 24-hour World’s Toughest Mudders, winning the 50+ age group twice and setting the all-time age-group record of 75 miles. With a history of tackling urgent crises—from helping build and operate a COVID-19 field hospital in Central Park in early 2020 to traveling four times to Ukraine's front lines to deliver aid—Tilson is a problem-solver who prioritizes people over politics. A New Yorker for over three decades, he lives in Manhattan, where he and his wife Susan raised their three daughters.

Barbara Winston Founder & President

Barbara Winston is the Founder and President of the Peace Innovation Initiative, Peace Cooperative, the Commission for Peace, and is an Ambassador of the UN-mandated University for Peace. Ms. Winston is a lifelong advocate for peace. She was also the former President of the UN Women for Peace Association and a trustee of the Institute of International Education, which focuses on international student exchange and aid, foreign affairs, and international peace and security. At IIE, Barbara was on the Fulbright Scholarship Committee. The Fulbright Program is an international exchange program sponsored by the United States government, designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and more than 155 countries worldwide. In 2023, Barbara was invited to join the Committee of Honor for L’Association Internationale les Amis des Musées d'Egypte (AME) (the International Association - Friends of Egyptian Museums). AME was founded in 1992 by former UNESCO Director-General Federico Mayor in collaboration with UNESCO, The International Council of Museums, and the Department of Egyptian Antiquities of Louvre Museum. With recognition as an eminent personality working for peace worldwide, Barbara has joined nine committee members, including Mrs. Lea Boutros Ghali, Mrs. Sonia Ramzi, Her Royal Highness the Princess Caroline of Monaco, and three former Directors-General of UNESCO. Together, their mission is to promote world heritage as a driving force for peace and development. Alongside this work, Barbara is a member of the President's Circle at the Asia Society Policy Institute (ASPI) and a member of the National Committee on Foreign Policy (NCAFP). ASPI tackles policy challenges confronting the Asia-Pacific in security, prosperity, and sustainability and provides unique opportunities for deeper understanding and cooperation among the Asian nations and the world. NCAFP identifies, articulates, and helps advance American foreign policy interests from a nonpartisan perspective within the framework of political realism, with dedication to the resolution of conflicts threatening US interests. She is also on the Chairman's Advisory Group of Washington's distinguished Hudson Institute. This non-profit organization seeks to guide public policymakers and global leaders in government and business through a program of publications, conferences, policy briefings, and recommendations. As president of Bruce Winston Gem Corporation, participation in art, design and fashion is constantly inspiring. Harry Winston, the King of Diamonds, who donated the Hope Diamond to the United States, is the father of Barbara's husband. A legacy of good deeds and service is a constant theme. Barbara has a lifelong, unshakeable dedication to the cause of equal justice

Emily Evans Director, Programs & Research emily@peaceinnovationinitiative.org

Emily is a socio-cultural anthropologist and peace innovator currently working as the Programs and Research Officer at the Peace Innovation Initiative. As a scholar and practitioner, she actively works to design and launch actionable and sustainable solutions for rebuilding our increasingly polarized public sphere through innovative research and cross-sectoral connections. Over the past 10 years, she has dedicated herself to uncovering the root causes of complex social and political issues that prevent various communities from experiencing stability and peace.

Drawing upon lessons from deeply divided societies around the world, her research uses ethnographic data to generate deeper understandings of present issues, and the people involved with focus on illuminating the often-misunderstood relationship between belonging narratives and political engagement. Believing that the ability to create space for paradox and conflict is critical for catalyzing peace and belonging within and between groups, she translates her findings in ways that rehumanize while maintaining the cruciality of accountability for hate-based action. With a commitment to both academic research and peacebuilding, she is currently researching how change happens within nonviolent and populist movements as she works to develop the field and practice of peace innovation. In 2021, she pursued this commitment at King’s College London as an MA student in Conflict Resolution in Divided Societies.

Her graduate dissertation was a secondary ethnographic study of white rural and industrial American communities and the collective narrative that informed political engagement from 2008 to 2016. As part of this and other research projects, she has sought to make sense of the intricacies of public opinion and affective experience around issues including immigration, racism, and economic instability. Emily also has a BA in Anthropology and a Certificate in Peace and Conflict Studies. While her research and work are grounded in cultural anthropology, social psychology, and political science, she has a passion for harnessing the power of cross-cultural and cross-sectoral thought and engagement for good. Having grown up in the US, the UK, and the Netherlands, her desire to connect across differences and bridge divisions in the midst of conflicting interests was nurtured from a young age, and she continues to incorporate these lessons into her everyday life, travels, research, and programmatic work
